Static problems and Advice
Introduction
Good communication is the key to a successful static. While many teams tend to settle on one or two main “leaders,” every single member should actively work to grow and make their static the best possible. Discuss decisions about raid strategies, goals, expectations, adding new members together as a group.
When all team members share the same vibe, mentality, and goals, the team succeeds and tends to see less conflict or roster turnover.
Inevitably, there will be a conflict or situation within a static that needs to be addressed. Our Mod Team is always on standby to assist members of the SG community if needed.
We always encourage players to try and first resolve any conflicts on their own. Building good communication skills can be invaluable in game and in life. Always:
- Be calm and professional. Nothing is ever accomplished with name calling.
- Be direct, but be respectful. Always remember there is a human on the other end of the screen.
- You may choose to use Private Threads in your team channel instead of dms
- No one except the members you add can see the thread.
- A Moderator can also see the discussion and jump in and help mediate
A few common scenarios you may encounter:
Attendance Issues
Have a player that is struggling to show up on time or calls out a lot?
- Do a friendly check in to see if your player is alright. They could have unplanned irl conflicts cropping up a lot lately. They could also be experiencing game burn out. Sometimes players are in over their head with outside issues, but are reluctant to bring it up to their static. Reach out them and start the conversation.
- Be supportive, but also be direct. Explain to them how attendance issues affect the team both in terms of gameplay consistency and morale if the static is experience a high rate of call outs.
- Ask your player if they can realistically continue their time commitment to the static. Reassure them that it is perfectly okay to admit if they cannot; but out of respect for the team a decision does need to be made. The player must either step up, or step back.
- Sometimes people just need a break to recharge or sort things out. Give them the space if you feel it is appropriate, but also give a deadline by when you need a final decision.
Underperforming Players
These players can be ones who have chronic issues with low dps, failing mechanics, dying early often, etc. There are a thousand reasons behind every one, but all can be frustrating for a static; particularly during progression. It can be very easy to fall into a habit of calling these players out (publicly or privately) and focusing solely on their shortcomings. Try to avoid focusing on the negative and instead offer helpful advice/solutions.
Low DPS
- Ensure that their ArcDPs is set up properly. Sometimes players have an inflated sense of their numbers from reading cleave damage only. Sometimes players don't know Arc exists.
- Give them example logs to look at from wingman on their professions. Use ones that have above average dps, not the top 10%, to show them what a good target number they should be reaching as a goal.
- Point them towards guides, offer to look at their golem logs if you can. Figure out if it is strictly a rotation issue/not understanding the class, or if they are struggling with performing the rotation in a live fight with movement/mechanics. Both can be easily fixed with practice and experience.
Struggling with Mechanics
Everyone has bad days in raiding. Everyone learns at a different pace.
You may not be able to push the keys for a player, but you can offer some suggestions that may help improve their mechanical skills.
- Try adjusting game settings: post processing, fov, anything that may help cut down on visual clutter.
- Be careful of lowering Model Count and Quality too much! Some mechanics will NOT be visible if you do this.
- Explain how to time/avoid common failed mechanics. Ex:
- Count to 3 and stepping out of Vale Guardian “blues”
- Double dodging INTO Sloth’s hitbox to avoid "shakes"
- Not standing in more than one “pizza slice” on Deimos
- Suggest they install BlishHUD timers, pathing, and markers
Mismatched Expectations
Sometimes players have different expectations on rate of progression, skill levels, or the overall vibe of the static. It is important to discuss team expectations as a group and ensure everyone is on the same page. Every player should always be working to improve their personal performance, and be putting in time outside of their raid to practice new roles, professions, rotations, etc.
Ask
- Are we more casual and just going for easy clears?
- Are we pushing for quicker times and more aggressive strategies?
- Do we have a timeline/game plan to follow for progression?
- Are we interested in doing CMs once for titles, or repeating them weekly?
- Etc.
Getting Help
In the event you encounter player issues in your static, and have tried the above suggestions, you can do the following:
- Ask in ✨︱static-reps for additional advice. Explain the problem, and what you have done so far to resolve it.
- Reach out to a Moderator via 📨︱support for:
- Help in mediating discussions.
- Help for forcibly removing players from your static
- We recommend giving the player a curtesy heads up, and will always ask if you have tried talking to said player before we remove.
